Our top story this week is that Facebook and Instagram were down this week. Wednesday afternoon across the globe, Facebook and Instagram experienced a major connection problem. It lasted from about 4pm-6pm in Europe. The glitch resulted in everyone heading over to the sometimes forgotten platform-Twitter, where the hashtag #FacebookDown was trending. Facebook hasn’t announced an official reason for the problem yet. (via The Guardian)
You can now see restaurant reviews and hail a ride from Snapchat. Book a reservation for a 5-star restaurant and call a cab all from Snapchat? Yes, please! This new feature called “Context Cards” allows users to see more info on a place when they view a public snap (i.e. on “Our Story” or in an advert). Simply swipe up to see more information on a geo-tagged snap. (via Mashable)
Facebook launched “Oculus Go” standalone VR headset. CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced this week that they are launching a $199 device that he calls the “most accessible VR headset yet”. What does this mean for the future of social? We will find out! (via Tech Crunch)
AOL is finally shutting down AIM for real. Before there was Facebook messenger, Snapchat, Instagram DM, Gchat or WhatsApp, we had AIM in the 90’s. The platform was revolutionary in letting you talk to friends across the globe. Sadly, AOL recently announced that the platform is shutting down on December 15 of this year. As the first major internet messaging platform, we will miss you AIM! ( via VOX)
Facebook launched “Workplace” screen sharing and other collaboration tools. Slack and Gchat look out! Facebook quietly launched their solution for workplace communication last week.The platform boasts that it is easy to use as people are already familiar with the tools. With a new feature for screen sharing via a desktop app, this may take off before you know it. (via Facebook)
